Ride the New York subway.

The NYC (New York City) subway system has 468 subway stations, with trains running along 24 different subway lines. If you have never attempted to ride the subway before, it can be confusing. However, it doesn't have to be. The process is rather simple. All you have to do is pay your fare and board the train. There are maps in each station to help you choose the right train to board.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a "pay-per-ride" MetroCard from any of the vending machines that are located inside the subway stations or from a station booth. The MetroCard is reloadable. Add as many trips to the card as you like. As of late 2010, the cost for one round-trip was $2.25.

    • 2

Obtain a "reduced-fare" MetroCard if you are age 65 or older, or have a disability. As of late 2010, the reduced-fare rate for seniors and the disabled was $1.10 per round-trip. In order to obtain a reduced-fare card, you must complete and mail the appropiate application. The application must also be notarized. It will take two to four weeks for your application to be processed. Your card will be mailed once the processing is complete.

    • 3

Obtain an "unlimited-ride" MetroCard. Unlimited ride cards can also be purchased from a station vending machine or booth. With an unlimited-ride card, you can ride as much as you want, for a certain number of days. The cards are sold in 30 -day, seven-day and one-day increments.

    • 4

Swipe your pay-per-ride, reduced-fare or unlimited-ride MetroCard at the subway turnstile. After you swipe the card, the turnstile will open, giving you access to the trains.

    • 5

Swipe your card on the bus if you must board a bus after getting off of the train. If you are required to get on a bus to reach your destination, you do not have to pay for a new trip.

Tips & Warnings

  • Note that up to three children 44 inches tall and under can ride free of charge on the subways if accompanied by a fare-paying adult.
