Check the frame around the sliding glass door for wall studs by tapping on the wall with your knuckles and listening for a hollow sound. A hollow sound indicates an area where no stud is present whereas a solid sound indicates a stud behind the drywall. If you are hanging lightweight curtains, you will want to install the hardware in a space that is free of studs. If you are hanging heavyweight curtains or using a heavy curtain rod, you will want to install the curtains directly into a stud. Make a mark on each end of the sliding glass door across the width of the glass where you intend to install the curtains.

Use the tape measure to calculate the horizontal distance from one end of the sliding glass door to the other. Make a note of this measurement. This will provide you with the length the curtain rod or rods will need to be to span the length of the sliding glass door, as well as the width of the curtains you will need. For example, if your sliding glass door is 15 feet long, you will need at least 15 feet of curtains to span the width of the door. If you want the curtains to have a bunched look, they will need to be longer depending on your preferences and the amount of bunching you want. If hanging two separate curtain rods, divide this measurement in half to find the length for each rod.

Use the tape measure to find the vertical measurement from the mark you made above the sliding glass door to the bottom of the door frame. Take note of the measurement and subtract 1 inch. This will provide you with the length that the curtains need to be to fully cover the sliding glass door.
