How to Get the Glaze Off of Rotors

Remove your tire to sand off rotor glaze.

Brake rotors are key components of your braking system. They allow the brake pads to push against the rotors, causing the car to slow down to a stop. Brake rotors must have a clean and smooth surface for the pads to work properly. Otherwise, you could experience problems like screeching, reduced stopping ability and damage to your braking system. Rotor glaze can accumulate over time and become hardened so that just attempting to wipe it off becomes insufficient to amend the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Jack up your car and remove the wheel to get to the rotor you wish to clean. Locate the indentation behind the front wheel or in front of the back wheel used to safely jack up your car. Reference your owners manual if you cannot locate the indentation. Secure the wheel on the opposing corner from the one you're removing by using a brick or block of wood to prevent the car from rolling. Loosen the lug nuts with your tire iron and then jack up the car until the tire is off the ground. Remove the lugs and take your wheel off.

Use 2,000 grit sandpaper to sand the entire rotor. Ensure that you don't leave any glazed spots left on the rotor.

    • 3

Inspect the rotor to check its smoothness. Sand smoothly a second time, if necessary, and wipe the disc off with a cloth.

    • 4

Reattach your tire and move on to the next wheel using the same procedure, if necessary. Replace your tire and use your tire iron to tighten the lug nuts, but do not tighten them completely. Lower the car slowly by releasing the pressure on your jack and finish tightening your lug nuts.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never jack up your car on an uneven surface or hill.
