Instructions

    • 1

Read the Federal Highway Transportation Safety Administration regulations for towing. Your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating. Check that weight rating against the weight of the rental trailer and the anticipated load. Switch to a lighter trailer if your anticipated load is too great,.

    • 2

Inspect the trailer hitch assembly for damage. It may be your trailer hitch or the temporary one you get from U-Haul. Test your vehicle's brakes. Test your vehicle's lights. Make sure your tires are full.

    • 3

Connect the trailer's coupler to the vehicle's ball hitch. Close the coupler's locking lever. Pass the safety retaining pin through the loop on the trailer's breakaway cable, then through the hole in the coupler's locking lever. Connect the lateral safety chains, left over right and right over left, to the holes in the hitch flange.

Connect the trailer lights. The connection will be a male-female, two-part plastic wiring connector, one half on the trailer and the other on the vehicle.

    • 5

Attach extra-side mirrors if necessary. Large U-Haul trailers come with extra-wide mirrors, which will have to be attached in accordance with U-Haul's instructions. If you are not using extra-wides, check your own lateral mirrors to make sure you can see along the trailer's sides from the driver's seat.

Road test the trailer. Test your lights. Drive it a short distance where you can check the brakes and the "pull." Get out and inspect the connections to ensure they are still secure.
