How to Unlock an Electronic Car Lock

How to Unlock an Electronic Car Lock thumbnail
Electronic car locks can be unlocked with the press of a button.

Many newer vehicles are equipped with electronic locks. These locks are operated by pressing buttons on a device called a key fob. Electronic locks may be considered a convenience because of their ease of use. If, for example, a car owner forgets to lock the door as he is walking away from the car, the door can be locked from a distance by simply pressing a button. The vehicle's key fob can typically open just one door, or all of the doors at once.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Unlock" button on the key fob once to open the driver's side door. This button often has an icon on it that looks like an open padlock.

    • 2

Hit the "Unlock" button again, within a few seconds after hitting it the first time, to unlock all of the vehicle's doors.

    • 3

Use the vehicle's smart key or intelligent key to open the door. This device must be kept with you, in your pocket or purse, to work. Press the button on the vehicle's door handle one time to open the driver's door, or twice to open all doors. Not all vehicles have this ability.

    • 4

Unlock the doors with the mechanical key on the end of the key fob. This is useful if the batteries are no longer working in the key fob.

    • 5

Press the "Unlock" button on the door panel or in the vehicle's center console if you are inside the vehicle. Some vehicles have multiple buttons that unlock only the front doors, while another button opens all of the doors.
