Instructions

    • 1

Cut a length of wick 5 in. longer than the height of the jelly jar.

    • 2

Secure one end of the wick to the wick clip, and then secure the clip to the bottom of the jar using candle adhesive.

    • 3

Wrap the free end of the wick around a pencil, and lay the pencil across the mouth of the jar. Make sure the wick is tight and straight through the center of the jar.

    • 4

Add water to the bottom of a double boiler, and bring to a boil. If you don't have a double boiler, use two pots that fit inside of each other or a tin can inside of another pot.

    • 5

Add the wax to the top of the double boiler. Stir the wax with an old metal spoon to keep it from sticking or scalding.

    • 6

Monitor the temperature of the wax with the candy thermometer. The optimal temperature of the wax will be indicated on the package, as this can change depending on the wax's manufacturer.

    • 7

Add candle fragrance and color when the wax is at the package-indicated temperature. Stir until both the color and fragrance are blended thoroughly.

    • 8

Pour the wax mixture into the jelly jar until it is three-fourths full.

    • 9

Allow the candle to cool for 24 hours, and then trim the wick to 2 in. long.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use jelly jars from around your home or can purchase the jars at a local dollar-type store.

  • Cover your countertop with newspaper to make cleanup easier.
