Although fluorescent bulbs are more energy efficient than standard incandescent bulbs, fluorescent bulbs contain mercury and other substances that are hazardous to human and animal health. Instructions

    • 1

Open a window in the room and leave the area for approximately 30 minutes immediately after breaking the fluorescent bulb.

    • 2

Put on gloves and a dust mask and return to the room. Remove a strip of tape from your duct tape or masking tape roll. Place the tape adhesive-side down against the broken bulb fragments and the powder on the floor. Lift the tape and discard it immediately. Repeat this process until all of the glass fragments are gone.

    • 3

Wet several paper towels and fold them into a large square. Wipe the floor well to remove any remaining powder. Throw the wet paper towels away. Repeat the process until the powder is gone.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you cannot clean up all of the powder with the tape and wet paper towels, you may use a vacuum cleaner, but do so carefully. Wear a dust mask and ensure the home is empty. Vacuum the affected area and immediately throw away the bag, or empty the canister. Open the windows and leave the home for about 30 minutes.
