How to Compare Motorcycle Gas Mileage

How to Compare Motorcycle Gas Mileage thumbnail
Gas mileage in motorcycles is typically higher than in cars.

Enjoyed by many, motorcycles are two-wheeled vehicles that offer an exciting alternative to cars. With many different types and styles available, including touring, street and dirt bikes, motorcycles have something to attract all different kinds of riders. When considering buying a motorcycle, an important feature to investigate is gas mileage. It's common for motorcycles to get better mileage than many cars. A comparison of gas mileage among several different motorcycles -- along with other specs -- can help you make an educated, informed purchase.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to a reputable motorcycle review website (see Resource section). If you've got specific bikes in mind, look for a search bar to enter your desired bikes. Otherwise, begin browsing reviews. Many sites allow you to specify a specific type of bike, so you don't have to sift through touring bikes if you're looking for a dirt bike.

    • 2

Right click the links for reviews of motorcycles you may be interested in and select either "open in new tab" or "open in new window." The wording may differ depending on your browser.

    • 3

Read or skim through each review until you find the section regarding the motorcycle's gas mileage. Many review sites list the specifications for each bike they review. Alternately, enter gas-related terms into your browsers search feature to quickly pinpoint such information.

    • 4

Write down the make, model and year of each bike that sounds promising. Then write the MPG and any other gas mileage information the review or specs offer. For example, Motorcycle.com's review of the 2010 Honda CBR125R says it averaged 84 miles per gallon (MPG) while going an average of 218 miles on a full tank of gas.

    • 5

Compare perspective bikes in this fashion until you find a select group with your desired gas mileage. Go into further detail researching these chosen bikes, comparing the full reviews and other specifications, until you find the bike for you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some websites (see Resource section) feature a database of motorcycle gas mileage information on older bikes. If you're shopping for used bikes, consider turning to one of these websites.
