If you need to replace the battery in your vehicle, the first step is to disconnect it and remove it from the vehicle. Disconnecting a car battery is a simple procedure, but you need to do it carefully. The potential for injury exists if you attempt to disconnect and remove the battery in a haphazard manner. Batteries are heavy, and they contain acid that can easily cause severe burns if it comes into contact with your skin.

      Identify the positive and negative terminals on the battery. The positive terminal is marked with a "+" symbol, and the cable is usually red. The negative terminal is marked with a "-" symbol, and the cable is usually black. Inspect the terminals for signs of corrosion, which appears as a white/greenish powder-like substance.

      Mix baking soda and cold water to create an anti-corrosion solution. Mix 1/2 cup of baking soda with 3/4 cup of cold water.

      Pour the baking soda solution onto the positive and negative terminals. Allow it to penetrate the corrosion. Wipe the terminals with paper towels.

      Loosen the negative battery terminal with an adjustable wrench. Once it is loose, remove the negative terminal from the negative post and set it aside. Repeat the process for the positive terminal.

      Unscrew the bracket or clamps that secure the battery to the battery tray. You made need a wrench to detach the clamp or bracket, or you may be able to loosen the clamp or bracket with your fingers.
