How to Make a Recycled Tire Swing

How to Make a Recycled Tire Swing thumbnail
Choose a tire that's in decent shape so it will hold up to bouncing and weight.

If you want to recreate childhood memories of summer afternoons spent swinging on a tire tied to a rope in the backyard or by a lake, find a sturdy tree that you have full permission to use and gather the few items needed. Also, if you have kids waiting, plan another activity to keep them occupied while you work.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill a few small holes around the tire to help rain drain out from any direction if the tire turns. Choose a sturdy tire so it won't break or start shredding. Gently used tires will work.

    • 2

Tie a small heavy object, such as a large carabiner or a ball in a sock, to the end of the long rope you plan to use and throw it up over a thick branch on the tree, far enough away from the tree to give you plenty of space to swing. This may take a few attempts, and you'll want to end with both ends of the rope in your hands.

    • 3

Tie a simple slip knot by crossing the ropes and pulling the back rope through the hole they create. Keep tugging alternately on both sides of the rope until the knot slides all the way up to the branch to give it a sturdier hold. It will tighten even more with rain and pressure.

    • 4

Tie the two ends of the rope securely around the tire. A variety of knots will hold, including a square knot; for safety, go ahead and layer several knots. Again, weatherization and use will tighten the knots.
