Directions for Making a Duvet Cover
The duvet cover is like a pillowcase for your comforter. The cover can be used to keep your comforter clean and to provide a quick change of décor. You can make a duvet cover out of many fabrics; you should consider which features of the fabric are important to you when shopping for the materials for this project. For some, a machine-washable fabric is more important; for others, an elegant, dry clean only fabric is preferred.
Since one of the duvet features is to keep the underlying comforter clean, you will want to create a temporary closure on the duvet. This will allow you to remove the cover for washing. Common closures include buttons, twill ties or Velcro.
Instructions

Flat Sheet Duvet Cover
-
1
Choose two flat sheets. The sheets should be the same standard size as the comforter being covered. Matching sets are not required. For example, you can combine a print and coordinating solid for versatility.
-
2
Machine wash new sheets to allow for shrinkage and then iron if necessary.
-
-
3
Face sheets together, right side in. Smooth any wrinkles. Pin or mark a 1/2-inch seam along three sides of the project. Include both the long sides and a short side in the seam markings.
-
4
Sew sheets together. Leave the unmarked short side open.
-
5
Turn cover right side out. Decide on closure options for the open side. Buttons and buttonholes, ties or Velcro are simple ideas.
Patchwork Duvet Cover
-
6
Measure the area of the comforter to be covered. You will need enough fabric to cover the comforter, plus an extra 1 inch on each of the sides and bottom, and an extra 6 inches at the top.
-
7
Arrange pre-cut fabric blocks (such as bandanas) or cut a different fabric into square blocks.
-
8
Sew blocks into strips with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Press seams open. Remember to sew a 1/2-inch at the top of the project. This will leave an extra 5 inches at the top for the duvet closure step. Sew strips together to form one large piece according to project measurements.
-
9
Select backing. Choose a flat sheet or quilt-back fabric from a craft store. Pin patchwork piece to backing, right sides together. Sew the bottom and sides along a 2-inch seam. Do not close the 5 inch opening at the top.
-
10
Double fold the opening at the top, creating a 3-inch fold. Stitch down the fold to create a finished edge on the overhang. Decide how to close the cover. Use buttons and button holes, Velcro or ties; any of these closures will allow for ease of placing and removing the comforter.
