Surveillance is defined as close and continuous observation. Surveillance equipment includes anything that is used to monitor human activity in a specific area or of a specific person. Businesses and individuals alike use surveillance equipment as a security measure around property. Governments use surveillance equipment to secure the national interest or prevent and gather evidence on criminal activity. Surveillance equipment may be obvious, such as a camera on a lamp post or building, or it may be hidden behind a mirror.

1. Check mirrors for hidden cameras. Press your fingertips to the mirror. If the reflection appears distant, the mirror is double sided and may be used for surveillance. Some equipment can also be hidden in paintings, smoke detectors and light fixtures. If you get the feeling that you are being watched, check there. Modern surveillance equipment can be very small to the point of being imperceptible.

2. Obtain anti-surveillance devices from a surveillance shop. Tap detectors unveil phone taps. Non-linear junction detectors warn of the presence of cameras or transmitters in the room.

3. Visit spy resource websites to purchase surveillance equipment. Audio recording pens and USB flash recorders can be purchased along with closed-circuit surveillance cameras and motion detectors.
