How to Make a Bobbin Holder

How to Make a Bobbin Holder thumbnail
Tiny bobbins are used to hold thread. Some are plastic, some are metal.

If you do a lot of work with bobbins, tiny reels of thread used in all kinds of needlework projects, such as sewing machines and lacemaking, then you need somewhere to store them. Building a holder to store these bobbins when you're not using them is simple, and there are many options for storage. Because it's easy to build a large collection of bobbins quickly, having a solution you can expand on is important.

Things You'll Need

  • 6-inch length of 1-inch vinyl tube

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a straight line along one side of the vinyl tube using the marker, down the length of the tube. Use a ruler to make the line straight.

    • 2

Draw a second line about ½-inch from that initial line, parallel to the first.

    • 3

Cut out the section of tube from the side. Use the utility knife to remove this section.

    • 4

Slip a bobbin inside the section of tube, using the side gash to insert it. Stack more bobbins on top, and repeat until the holder is full. If you need more storage, make another out of another length of tubing.

Tips & Warnings

  • An alternative method for storing bobbins is to clip the bobbins into the binding from a plastic binding comb. If you can find a transparent one, this is ideal. Unfurl one of the plastic clips, and slip the bobbin onto that comb tooth. Let wind again, and you're ready to store the next.
