Brewing Espresso on a Krups Machine
-
1
Prepare to brew the espresso. To ensure that the espresso machine is clean and ready to go, remove the filter or coffee grounds "basket." This basket is usually found in the "brew head," with a handle that unlocks horizontially to the left. Make sure that the basket is empty, rinse it out with cold water and dry with a clean kitchen towel. Locate and open the water reservoir according to the directions for your specific machine. Pour the recommended amount of water into the reservoir and replace the top. Preheat your machine by turning it on. Preheat the espresso cup by placing it on the top of machine or by filling it with hot water.

Place the finely ground espresso into the coffee machine's basket. You may be using a prepackaged "pod" or loose espresso. If using the pod, just place the coffee in the basket, place the basket in the "brew head" and follow your machine's instructions to lock it safely into place. If using loose coffee, spoon the espresso into the basket, according to your machine's directions. Using the tamper or the back of a spoon, press the coffee firm into the basket. Clean the lip and outside of the basket. Place the basket in the brew head and lock it into place.

Brew the espresso according to your machine's directions. Place the empty, preheated espresso cup under the filter holder spigot. The espresso machine will begin to heat the water and run it through the coffee grounds. At this point, the aroma of freshly brewing coffee will drift from the machine, accompanied by steam and a bubbling, frothy sound of the espresso filling into the cup. Turn off the machine and enjoy your cup of espresso.

Tips & Warnings
As you become familiar with the process of making espresso, you will discover your preferences in the amount of coffee and how firmly you tamp it into the basket. Firmy pressed coffee makes a stronger flavor, but also takes longer to brew. Experiment with a variety of coffees.
Espresso machines are hot and require caution. Hot steam can burn. Never remove the coffee basket, brew heat or top of the water reservoir while the machine is hot and brewing. Wait to clean the machine after it has completely cooled down. Follow your machine's specific instructions.
