How to Get Crazy Glue Off Wood

The name crazy glue applies to several adhesive brands, including Super Glue, Krazy Glue, and any other glue that contains methyl alpha-cyanoacrylate. Crazy glue may be a handy tool when it comes to crafts, furniture and general repair, but it can be a pain to get rid of if applied to the wrong place. It is an exceptionally strong adhesive that dries very quickly and does not dissolve in water. It's easier to remove from some substances, like your own skin. It's much more difficult to remove it from other materials, like wood. However, it can be done -- all you need are the right tools and a lot of patience.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the entire affected area of wood with acetone, the active ingredient in nail polish remover that will remove the glue. Allow it to soak for approximately 10 minutes. Don't try to soak it for much longer than that -- the acetone will damage the wood if left there too long.

    • 2

Wipe up the acetone with a rag and scrub the area covered with crazy glue. The sponge you use should not be overly abrasive -- you don't want to scratch the wood, particularly if it's a polished hardwood floor. Alternately, use an old, soft toothbrush.

    • 3

Repeat the process until all of the crazy glue is gone. It make take two or three times or even more until you're done.

Tips & Warnings

  • Acetone is very flammable -- any and all potential sources of ignition should be removed, including sparks, flames, cigarettes and hot surfaces.

  • Make sure that you are in a well-ventilated area when you work with acetone.

  • Avoid letting acetone come in contact with your eyes.

  • Acetone can irritate your skin -- make sure to wash your hands after using it and to moisurize.
