How to Use an Electronic Mortar & Pestle

How to Use an Electronic Mortar & Pestle thumbnail
Pharmacists use electronic mortar and pestles.

The electronic mortar and pestle is used in both the medical field and kitchens. This appliance has revolutionized pharmacies by being able to quickly mix liquid medicines and ointments. The traditional mortar and pestle is made up of a bowl and a tool that's used to grind ingredients in the bowl. With an electronic mortar and pestle, a blade that spins and a moving mechanical arm quickly reduce and combine all types of products. The ingredients are ground as the pestle pushes them against the bowl. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place your products in the jar of the electric mortar and pestle. The bowl of a basic mortar and pestle is replaced with a jar for the electric version. You'll need to unscrew the cap and lid on the jar. Use small quantities.

    • 2

Insert the jar into the jar housing on the machine. Make sure to press down on the jar firmly so that it's solidly in the housing and won't move or come out.

    • 3

Push down on the pestle slightly, which will apply a little extra pressure to pound the products. If you're using harder products, like pills, you may need to move the pestle over it in a back and forth motion.

    • 4

Use a circular motion to move the pestle around the jar to get any leftover unbroken pieces.

    • 5

Set a pre-set mixing program, which is an option on some electric mortar and pestles. This will greatly reduce the time it takes to choose specifics and allows pharmacists and cooks to focus on ingredients instead.

    • 6

Weigh your final products and dispense the required amount into jars or containers. Remove the jar from the housing by using a counter-clockwise turn, going the same direction as the blade would spin.

Tips & Warnings

  • When ingredients are put into a food processor or electric grinder, the aroma can literally be burned off. An electric mortar and pestle, though, does not have this side-effect. However, using a mortar and pestle, even an electronic one, can be time-consuming and sometimes laborious, depending upon the ingredients you're using. If you need to have the ingredients pulverized quickly, and if flavor isn't a big consideration, you may want to use a food processor instead.
