How to Update Resume Templates

Templates are electronic documents that are already formatted for use. Once you open a template, all you do is update the default sample text with your own information. Because resumes vary based on career type, templates are helpful to make sure the resume is in the correct format. To edit a resume template, you need word processing software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works or OpenOffice Writer.

      Open the resume file using your word processing software.

      Click each existing field to update the template with your personal information. Delete the existing text and replace it with your own.

      Create new lines of information in a section by placing your cursor at the end of the last line and hitting the enter button. Type your new information in this new line.

      Save the file by clicking the "File" tab. Choose "Save As" from the list of options. Choose a save destination and name your file. Change the "Save as Type" to a template. Click the "Save" button.
