How to Check a Wiper Motor thumbnail
The wiper motor controls the speed and efficiency of the windshield wipers.

Windshield wipers are controlled by the wiper motor, which can be found in a vehicle's engine compartment. While wiper motor malfunctions account for the majority of windshield wiper problems, it's also important to eliminate other possibilities before troubleshooting the wiper motor. If your blades aren't working, check to see if there are any leaves or debris blocking them.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the wiper motor in the engine compartment. Reference your owners manual for the exact location of the wiper motor.

    • 2

Remove any debris near the wiper or motor. Check to see if this makes a difference by engaging your wipers when the vehicle is on.

    • 3

Inspect the wires going to and from the wiper motor for signs of damage or blown fuses.

    • 4

Remove the fuse box cover and use your owners manual to identify the corresponding wiper motor fuse. If the linkage is broken on the fuse, you will need to replace it.

    • 5

Inspect the wiper motor for signs of corrosion. Replace the corroded mount bolts with new ones if necessary.
