How to Customize the Common File Dialog in Office 2007

Microsoft Office 2007 is a suite of applications that include Microsoft Word 2007, Microsoft Excel 2007, Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and other productivity applications, depending on the edition you have. It uses a common file dialog that appears when you try to open or save a document. You can customize this common file dialog by adding more folder locations to the "My Places" bar located at the side of the dialog. This bar lets you quickly access any folders that you add to the bar; you access them by clicking their corresponding icons.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch any Microsoft Office 2007 application from the Start menu or desktop. Open the common file dialog by clicking the "Microsoft Office Button" (represented by the colorful Microsoft Office logo contained inside an orb) and then clicking "Open."

    • 2

Open the folder that you wish to add to the "My Places" bar. Right-click an empty spot on the "My Places" bar and click "Add folder name." You should see a new shortcut that leads to the target folder when you click it. Browse to another folder and repeat this step to add more folder locations.

    • 3

Right-click any of the items that you added on the "My Places" bar and click "Move Up" or "Move Down" to alter the position of the selected folder.

    • 4

Right-click any blank spot of the "My Places" bar and select "Small Icons" or "Large Icons" to change the size of icons.

    • 5

Change the name of any of the folder items you added by right-clicking the item that you wish to rename and clicking "Rename Place." Right-click an item on the "My Places" bar and click "Remove" if you wish to delete the item.
