How to Convert Gedcom to XML

The Gedcom file format (GED) is a system for storing family tree information. It is compatible with many genealogy programs, allowing genealogy enthusiasts to easily share their data with one another. However, a Gedcom file cannot be viewed directly in a Web browser, and often cannot be viewed in database programs not specifically designed for genealogy. Converting the Gedcom file to the more universal XML format is one way to resolve this issue, and a free online tool exists for performing this function from within a Web browser.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Web browser and navigate to the Gedcom to XML conversion form at the Ged2x website. (See Resources.)

    • 2

Click the "Choose File" button under "Local GEDCOM File." A file navigation window opens. Browse to the location of the Gedcom file that you would like to convert, and double-click it.

    • 3

Click the "Convert File" button. Your computer uploads the Gedcom file to the Ged2x website, and after a moment, a download window opens for the converted XML file.

    • 4

Navigate to the location on your computer where you would like to save the converted XML file. Type a file name and click the "Save" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Ged2x tool can also convert Gedcom files that you find online. To do this, copy the full URL of the file into the "URL" box and click the "Convert URL" button.
