How to Repair a Chrome Auto Bumper

How to Repair a Chrome Auto Bumper thumbnail
Restore a chrome bumper with mildly abrasive chrome polish.

Chrome bumpers on any car, whether classic or brand new, can add beauty and a shine to an otherwise dull vehicle. Unfortunately, when chrome bumpers become exposed to the elements, such as sand, dirt and road salt, they can become covered with small scratches which will dull the surface's otherwise bright appearance. Repair a chrome automotive bumper at home without the need for expensive automotive equipment.

Things You'll Need

  • Car soap
  • Soft cloths
  • Garden hose
  • Mildly abrasive chrome polish
  • Terry cloth towels

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the chrome bumper with mild car shampoo and a soft towel to remove any dirt and debris.

    • 2

Rinse away the car shampoo with a garden hose and dry the bumper with an additional soft cloth.

    • 3

Polish the chrome bumper with a mildly abrasive chrome polish, which you can purchase at automotive supply stores. Use a terry cloth towel and apply the polish in overlapping circles. The abrasive polish will restore the shine to the chrome while removing any superficial scratches.

    • 4

Allow the polish to haze, which should take anywhere from one to two minutes.

    • 5

Buff away the polish with a terry cloth towel. Once again, rub away the polish using overlapping circles. Continue until all of the polish is removed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Park the vehicle in the shade and apply the chrome polish to a cool bumper. This will ensure that the polish does not haze too quickly.
