How to Use SmartDraw

SmartDraw is a visual processor that uses complex algorithms to generate various kinds of graphics. It lets you make flowcharts, diagrams, calendars, organization charts, family trees, floor plans, maps and other types of charts for presentation purposes. SmartDraw includes the necessary templates so you can create them quickly. It also provides exporting options to other productivity applications including Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel. SmartDraw VP is the latest version as of November 2010, featuring AutoSave and custom template categories.

Instructions

      Load SmartDraw from the desktop or Start menu and click the desired visual to open a visual template. Choose a category from the left panel to browse for more templates.

      Configure your Work Area by clicking the "Page" tab on the Ribbon found on the top and then clicking "Work Area" in the "Page Setup" group. Set the values in the "Set The Work Area" dialog box to suit your preferences.

      Click any of the resources on the SmartPanel on the left or on the Ribbon to use them to create objects. Click and drag on the Work Area to create objects based on your selection. Keep using these different resources and settings until you are satisfied with what you see on the Work Area.

      Click the round button with the SmartDraw icon on the upper-left corner of the window and click "Save" to save your work. Click the SmartDraw button again and click "Export" to export your work so other systems that do not have SmartDraw installed can see the graphic. Choose what format you want SmartDraw to export as to carry out the action.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click the "SmartHelp" button on the right side of the window to open up a pane that displays helpful instructions regarding the SmartDraw features and tools, along with tutorial videos.

  • You can search for a template from the Home screen by clicking the "Search" link on the upper-right. Type in keywords to find matching templates.

  • Open files or templates recently from the Home screen by clicking the "Documents" or Templates" items under "Recent" on the side bar.

  • Print your work by clicking the small "Printer" icon on the title bar if you wish to see your output on paper.
