How to Get Around a Smart Filter

Smart Filter is a program created by McAfee, an Internet security software company. Smart Filter is generally designed to prevent an employee from accessing sites that an administrator believes are security risks or are inappropriate. Moreover, Smart Filter allows an administrator to monitor Internet use. While it is not recommended in most cases, there is a way to work around Smart Filter.

Instructions

  1. Internet Options

      Launch Internet Explorer.

      Click "Tools," then "Internet Options." Proceed to Step 3 and ignore Section 2 if you do not get an error message. Skip to Section 2 if you get an error message.

      Click the "Security" tab, choose "Custom Level," scroll down to "File Downloads" and click "Enable."

      Select "OK."

      Choose the "Connections" tab, click "LAN Settings," then uncheck "Use a Proxy Server" in the Proxy Options section.

      Click "OK," then click "OK" again.

    Edit Registry Option

      Click the Windows logo in the lower left corner of your desktop. Type "regedit" into the "Search" box, then press "Enter" to open the Registry Editor.

      Select the following registry entry in the left pane of the Registry Editor.

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions

      Double-click the first entry listed in the right pane of the Registry Editor ("NoSaveAsDialog") and change the value to "0." Repeat this for every registry entry listed in the right pane of the Registry Editor.

      Close the Registry Editor, then return to Section 1 and follow the listed steps.
