How to Etch Glass Designs
Etching designs into glass is a great way to personalize items like glass dishes, coasters, vases and ornaments, or larger items like glass trays or glass fireplace screens. You can etch a design that coordinates with other items in your home, or etch the monogram of a friend or family member's initials for a personalized gift. Before taking on larger etching projects, consider practicing etching on a smaller, inexpensive piece like a plate or bowl to perfect your skills.
Things You'll Need
- Glass etching compound
- Foam brush
- Transparent contact paper
- Water
- Latex gloves
- Glass cleaner
- Craft knife
- Pencils
- Paper towels
Instructions
-
-
1
Clean the glass object you want to etch with glass cleaner and a paper towel, making sure it is completely clean of streaks and lint.
-
2
Stick transparent contact paper to the area you want to etch. Eliminate any air bubbles by pressing them out with your finger. If you are etching on a flat surface, you can use the flat edge of a book or ruler as a squeegee to remove any air bubbles.
-
-
3
Place your design underneath the glass so it shows through to the contact paper. Trace the design onto the contact paper with a pencil. You can draw a design by hand or print letters or images found online.
-
4
Cut the design out of the contact paper with a craft knife, and carefully peel away the areas to be exposed. Press down the edges of the remaining contact paper to make sure it is firmly sealed to the glass.
-
5
Put on your latex gloves and spread the glass etching compound onto the exposed area with the foam brush. Let the compound sit on the glass for the time recommended on the bottle, usually five minutes.
-
6
Rinse the glass with cool water until the compound is washed off completely. Peel off the contact paper and rinse again.

Tips & Warnings
To skip steps two and three, purchase a ready-made design stencil available at craft stores that you simply peel and stick directly to the glass.
