How to Fire Caulk

When penetrations are made through certain wall, floor or ceiling surfaces, the gaps around the penetrating object must be filled with a special caulk that prevents flame spread. This caulk is known as fire caulk and it has a distinct color to help you identify it from regular caulking. It is used between basements and first floors as well as between ceiling and attics. No special tools are needed to apply fire caulk -- just a regular caulk gun is needed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep and vacuum the area you wish to caulk. All dirt and debris must be removed for proper caulk adhesion.

    • 2

Pack large gaps with mineral wool to provide a backing for the caulk to rest on.

    • 3

Cut the tip of the fire caulk cartridge with your utility knife at the desired bead width. Most cartridges will have numbered increments on the cartridge.

    • 4

Load the cartridge into the caulk gun. Squeeze the trigger to dispense the fire caulk into the void until it reaches a depth of at least 1 inch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Verify that you can no longer see through the floor, wall or ceiling around the penetrating objects.

  • Do not disturb the objects or caulk until the caulk is 100 percent cured.
