Test Christmas lights before weaving them onto artificial tree panels.

Panel Christmas trees are often set up in town squares or in front of public buildings to bring festive cheer to outdoor spaces. These artificial trees have a perfect cone shape and vary in height from about 15 feet to more than 100 feet tall. Built for indoor or outdoor use, they have frames often made from metal tubing with rounded panels covered in garland. Stringing lights on a panel tree is a process best done by two people. Instructions

    • 1

Check that the surface area is level. Panel Christmas trees require level ground to stand securely.

    • 2

Build the structural frame for the tree. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions to ensure that the frame is assembled correctly.

    • 3

Purchase solid, clear or multi-color Christmas lights for the tree and test them. If you want to add special treatments like snowflakes, stars or ribbon to the tree, you'll need to have these items on hand when setting up the lights.

    • 4

Lay out the tree panels on a clean surface. Organize the panels with the top ones first and the panels for the bottom of the tree last.

    • 5

Weave a string of lights through the garland on your first panel. Avoid wrapping the lights around the outer border of the panel, as this will need to attach to the frame.

    • 6

Add any ornaments or extra treatments to the panel, leaving enough wire to plug into the outlet or extension cord.

    • 7

Decorate the panels one at a time with lights and treatments. Compare the panels to be sure the lights are even and positioned the way you want them.

    • 8

Connect the first panel to the top of the tree's frame. Plug in the lights and step back to make sure you're satisfied with how the lights look. Remove the panel if you want to adjust or add any lights.

    • 9

Attach the other panels one at a time, working your way from the top of the tree to the bottom. Situate any excess wires near the back of the tree.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unplug your lights before rearranging them.

  • If your lights are not purchased new, throw away any wires that look frayed or exposed.
