How to Glue Mylar Decals

Mylar decals are a type of vehicle decal that have a thin plastic coating to protect the surface of the decal from rain, snow and other moisture. Mylar decals are slightly different than vinyl decals, and the application of the decal is different. Most Mylar decals come with an adhesive backing that is activated with a solution of window cleaner. However, even if your decal no longer has its adhesive backing you can still attach the decal with silicone glue.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill any holes in the body of the car with auto body filler. Allow the filler to dry for two hours. Sand the filler completely smooth with sandpaper. Cover the filler with touch-up paint. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.

    • 2

Clean the side of the car with a degreasing cleanser and rubbing alcohol to remove all dirt, oil and wax from the side of the car.

    • 3

Cut the borders of the Mylar decal as close to the decal itself as possible. Before removing the plastic backing, check the placement of the decal to ensure you have the best position for the decal.

    • 4

Remove the adhesive backing from the decal. Spray the surface of the car with window cleaning spray where you want to place the decal. Place the decal over the wet spot, starting with the middle of the decal. The window cleaner helps the glue activate.

    • 5

Flatten the decal out with your fingers working from the middle toward the edges. Use a squeegee to squeeze out any excess window spray from the edges of the decal and to remove all air bubbles.

    • 6

Allow the decal to dry for 24 hours before taking the car out in the rain or other moist conditions.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the Mylar decal no longer has the adhesive backing on it, spread a waterproof silicone sealer around the back of the decal before pressing it against the car. For this adhesion method, do not use window cleaner to apply the decal. Wipe away excess glue with a soft, damp cloth.
