How to Blend Oil With Diesel Fuel

Biodiesel is more cost efficient than regular fuel.

Vehicle owners may chose to use a blend of oil and diesel fuel, more commonly known as biodiesel, to run their car. This type of fuel is made by mixing different types of vegetable oils with diesel fuel. Biodiesel fuel is more cost effective than regular fuel, as well as environmentally friendly. The final combination of diesel and vegetable oil is easy to prepare, using any type of household vegetable oil.

    • 1

Choose the appropriate oil to mix with the diesel fuel, such as vegetable oil. The vegetable oil does not need to be one that is more expensive; cheaper oils such a Canola will work just as well. Waste vegetable oil -- WVO -- oils from restaurants and delis, can be used as well. However, this oil will need to be filtered before usage.

Measure equal parts of diesel and oil with the large measuring cup. Pour the contents in a large bucket and stir the mixture. Typically, a mixture with a ratio of 50:50 diesel and oil is used. In colder climates, a higher ratio of diesel can be used to thin out the fuel and allow the engine to run efficiently. Ratios of 80:20, with more vegetable oil, can be used in warmer climates because hot temperatures thin out the fuel.

Funnel the biodiesel fuel into the car to allow the car to run properly. Use a jerrycan to store the excess fuel for later use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a fuel heater to keep the fuel thin if it is used a lot. This will allow the usage of higher percentages of oil, which is most cost efficient.

  • Check with the dealership the car was purchased at because using oil with diesel can void the warranty on the car. However, some dealerships offer extended warranties for oil and diesel fuel blends.

  • In the morning after a colder night, it may be more difficult to start the car when using biodiesel fuel.
