How to Close Your Water Meter

Your water meter plays an important role in the home. It allows water from the city to come into the home. Usually once a month, a person from your water provider comes out and reads the meter to see how much water you've used. That is normally how they calculate your bill. On top of the water meter is a valve that can be closed to stop water from entering into the home. If you have to work on some plumbing you may need to shut off your home's water supply and close your water meter. Does this Spark an idea?

      Head outside and access your water meter.

      Attach your crescent wrench tightly to the valve on top of the water meter.

    • 3

      Pull the crescent wrench clockwise until you meet resistance and can't turn it anymore. You've now closed your water meter.

Tips & Warnings

  • To turn the water back on, use the wrench to turn the knob in the opposite direction, counterclockwise, as when you turned the water off. When you meet pressure, you've turned the water back on.
