How to Inspire Good Leadership Skills

Leadership and good management goes beyond just demonstrating leadership. A great manager or leader inspires leadership skills in others and encourages employees to take ownership, grow and make decisions on their own. Inspiring leadership skills in others requires confidence in your own leadership style and abilities as well as recognition of the talents of others. Several of the "five practices of exemplary leadership" identified by Santa Clara University Leavey School of Business faculty members Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner involve inspiring good leadership skills in others. Using these and other leadership principles, you can inspire good leadership skills in others around you.

Instructions

    • 1

Demonstrate what is expected. According to Kouzes and Posner, leaders "create standards of excellence" and use those standards to show others the way to achieve. By upholding high standards, you inspire others to meet those standards as well.

    • 2

Develop and instill a common goal. Also according to Kouzes and Posner, leaders "creat(e) an ideal and unique image of what the organization can become." By sharing your vision with your team, you inspire them to work with you to achieve that through their own leadership. Shared passions can bridge cultural or generational gaps.

    • 3

Allow others to succeed. Empowering your team members to do their jobs allows them to stretch and grow. Permit them to determine their own goals and then give them the tools they need to meet those goals.

    • 4

Reward and recognize achievement. Honoring accomplishments encourages others to continue to excel. Give frequent and encouraging feedback.

    • 5

Make your assignments challenging and rewarding. Tasks that are inherently satisfying increase motivation and encourage employees or team members to take on more.
