How to Repair a Bendix 70 Bicycle
The Bendix 70 was at one time a standard issue coaster brake hub that came on many bicycles. The hub featured an intuitive back-pedal braking system, which now is usually only found on children's bikes and cruisers. While the hubs were well made and did not often require service, they are now very old and many may not work the way they did when they were prominent parts. However, with a little know-how and the right tools, you can get your Bendix hub shifting smoothly once again.

1
Set your bicycle on its kickstand, or on a dedicated work stand. You will need to be able to spin the rear wheel freely while performing this procedure.
-
2
Spin the cranks of the bike forward and set the handlebar shifter into the first gear position. Follow the shifter cable to the rear hub shifter attached to the drive-side axle.
-
-
3
Loosen the barrel adjuster locknut (on the cable just before the shifter) using a 10mm wrench to release the barrel adjuster. Twist the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise until the cable separates into two parts.
-
4
Move the shifter lever on the handlebars to the gear two position. Spin the cranks of a the bike a few revolutions to make sure the rear hub has settled into gear.
-
5
Reattach the two cable ends where you disconnected them previously by twisting the large end onto the threaded end clockwise. Spin the cranks of the bike. At the same time, twist the barrel adjuster clockwise until you feel the bike shift into the second gear.
-
6
Spin the barrel adjuster one more turn clockwise. Tighten the barrel adjuster locknut using a 10mm wrench to keep the barrel adjuster from loosening as you ride. Take the bike for a test ride to be sure it is shifting correctly between the two gears.
