1996 Nissan Sentra Power Steering Pump Installation

The power steering pump on the 1996 Nissan Sentra is located between the driver's side engine head and the driver's side fender well. It bolts to the engine block and has two hydraulic hoses connected to it. The power steering pump makes it easier to turn the steering wheel. Without it, you would use all your might to turn the wheel. As the pump weakens you will notice it is harder to turn the wheel, especially at slower speeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the idler pulley between the power steering pulley and the alternator pulley. Place a 3/8-inch ratchet driver into the square hole on the idler pulley arm, pull up on the handle and remove the pulley drive belt from the power steering pulley.

    • 2

Loosen the band clamps that secure both hydraulic hoses to the power steering pump using a screwdriver. Pull the hoses off the pump. Double over the end of the hoses and clamp them shut using a pair of vise grips. This keeps the fluid from leaking out of the hoses.

    • 3

Remove the bolts that secure the power steering pump to the side of the engine block using a socket and ratchet. Discard the old pump.

    • 4

Place the new pump against the engine block and secure it using the bolts, socket and ratchet.

    • 5

Remove the vise grips from the hydraulic hoses and secure the hoses to the new pump using the band clamps and screwdriver.

    • 6

Pull up on the ratchet handle and slide the belt over the power steering pump pulley. Remove the ratchet from the idler arm.

    • 7

Fill the power steering pump 3/4 full with power steering fluid. Place the lid onto the power steering pump and then remove it. Check the dipstick on the bottom of the power steering pump lid. Add additional power steering pump fluid as needed.
