How to Repair Lock Sets

Locks can wear out easily because of the constant opening and closing of the door.

Repairing lock sets involves tightening screws, lubricating moving parts and replacing latches or screws. The latch mechanism of the lock set gets the most wear because of the door's constant opening and closing. Constant retracting of the latch causes worn springs. Bent latches call for replacement, which is quite simple.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver
• Replacement latch
• Replacement screws
• Spray lubricant
• Rag

Instructions

1. Loosen the screws in the latch and knobs and remove them.

2. Remove the knobs and latch.

3. Replace the latch with the new one and screw in new latch screws.

4. Apply spray lubricant to all parts inside the knobs, and wipe the excess lubricant away with a rag.

5. Replace the knobs and screws.

Tips & Warnings

• Check the function of the lock after the repair. If it sticks, loosen the screws and realign the knob.
