How to Make an Oyster Shucker

How to Make an Oyster Shucker thumbnail
Shuck oysters with an edge of strong steel.

Oyster shuckers are similar to knives, but have a short, dull blade. Your oyster shucker must be strong but not sharp, just in case your hand slips off an oyster when you are trying to shuck it. Oyster shuckers slip into the opening of the oyster and pop it open, so a small, dull steel device is appropriate.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • 1095 plain carbon steel
  • Hole punch
  • Electric drill
  • Clamp
  • Wood bench
  • Metal hacksaw

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the steel portion of the oyster shucker on a blank sheet of paper. The steel tip should be no longer than a small butter knife, with a rounded tip.

    • 2

Make holes around the outside of the outline on the paper using a hole punch. While wearing your safety goggles, clamp the sheet of steel to the wood bench using a clamp.

    • 3

Lay the paper over the steel and use the holes in the paper as a guide to drill holes through the sheet of steel with an electric drill.

    • 4

Cut out the steel with the metal hacksaw, using the dots as a guide.

    • 5

File the edges around the entire piece of metal so that when you hold it to shuck oysters you will not be in danger of cutting yourself.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use caution when handling sharp objects and electric tools to minimize the risk of injury.
