How to Maintain an A&P License

How to Maintain an A&P License thumbnail
Maintain your A&P license so you can continue to work on aircraft.

An airframe and power plant mechanic (A&P) is licensed to work on any craft or machine with an airframe or power plant component. Most often, A&P mechanics work on aircraft. An A&P license is regulated through the Federal Aviation Administration. Once a mechanic is licensed as an A&P, the license is good for a lifetime. An A&P will never have to retest or become recertified as long as he remains active in the field.

Instructions

    • 1

Work in an A&P capacity for at least six months within the last 24 months. The six months of work can be staggered. For example, you worked two months straight, took off for several months, and then worked another four months straight.

    • 2

Supervise other A&P mechanics for six months within the last 24 months. In the supervisory position, you can directly supervise other mechanics or work in an executive capacity over an entire aircraft maintenance department.

    • 3

Get a supervisor, or other administrator, in an A&P field to verify that you are competent and able to complete required A&P work. An administrator can verify this, even if you have not been actively working as an A&P within the past 24 months.
