How to Calculate a Grade Average Score
GPA stands for Grade Point Average and is an important asset for getting into college. The higher GPA you have, the better chance you have to get into a good college. Grade points are numerical values that show you how well you did in a class. They are also know as quality points. Learn to calculate your grade average score by keeping track of your GPA.

1
Write down a list of each course that you have and assign a letter grade next to it. For example, if you have six classes, your list may have the following courses with respected grades: Biology: A, Physical Education: A, Spanish: B, English: B, History: C and Geometry: C. Listing your classes and grades will organize the information in a way that makes it easier for you to calculate your grade point average.

2
Determine the value of each letter. Each letter is worth a certain amount of grade points. An A+, A and A- are worth four grade points. A B+, B and B- are worth three grade points. A C+, C and C- are worth two grade points. A D+, D and D- are worth one grade points. An F is worth zero points. Write down the grade point value next to each grade you have.

Add the total amount of grade points earned and divide that number by the total number of grades or classes you're taking. For example, a course list of Biology: A, Physical Education: A, Spanish: B, English B, History: C and Geometry: C will have the respected grade point values of four, four, three, three, two and two. When you add these numbers together, you get total grade point of 18. Divide 18 by six, for six total grades or classes, and you get three or 3.0 as your grade point average. This is your grade average score.

Tips & Warnings
Certain schools offer advanced placement classes that reward a student an extra point -- e.g. an A is worth 5 grade points instead of 4 grade points -- for their efforts in a more advanced class. Take this into consideration and use the same method above when calculating your GPA.
