My Nissan Altima Keys Won't Come Out

by Kelly Reese

The Nissan Altima is equipped with a theft deterrent system that prevents the car from starting without the registered key in the ignition. Another deterrent is the ignition key starting sequence that is built into the vehicle. If the incorrect ignition sequence is performed, the vehicle will not start. The incorrect ignition sequence can also prevent the key from coming out of the ignition. To remove the key, you will need to perform the correct ignition sequence.

Step 1

Push the gear lever into the "Park" position and turn the key in the ignition to the "ON" position.

Step 2

Turn the key toward you into the "Lock" position. Pull the key away from the ignition. If you are still unable to remove the key, turn the key to the "ACC" position.

Step 3

Move the shift lever to the "Neutral" position and push it back to the "Park" position. Turn the key to the "Lock" position and pull the key from the ignition. If the key still will not come out of the ignition, turn the key to the "ON" position.

Step 4

Point a can of WD-40 into the ignition where the key is stuck. Spray once in the ignition where the key is stuck.

Step 5

Wait for 10 seconds and spray once more into the ignition. Turn the key to the "Lock" position and pull the key from the ignition.
