Consider the size of your yard and they type of grass to be mowed. Gas powered mowers are typically more powerful than electric mowers, which usually cut a narrower path. Some electric models offer cordless operation through battery power, which typically last about 45 minutes, not as long as a gas-powered mower with a full tank. Other electric models must be plugged in, and can be inconvenient if you have a large area to mow.

Consider your physical fitness. Although both electric and gas-powered mowers are offered in self propelled models, gas-powered mowers are much heavier than electric ones and require strength to maneuver them.

Consider the impact on the environment. Electric mowers are much quieter than gas mowers and produce no exhaust. Some homeowners' associations even offer rebates to residents who choose electric mowers over gas.
