How to Protect Receding Gums and Teeth With Resin

How to Protect Receding Gums and Teeth With Resin thumbnail
Resin can be used on adults and children to protect their teeth.

The tooth-colored resin also called dental bonding has several uses including the protection of receding gums and teeth. It can be used as a filling for a decaying tooth, to alter the shape of the tooth such as making it longer and as protection for exposed roots of receding gums. It can be used to replace the older silver fillings. It is also less expensive option than veneer as of 2010.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the dentist and get your teeth assessed to find out whether you need bonding for receding gums and teeth. Make an appointment to come back to have the dentist put resin on your tooth.

    • 2

Evaluate with your dentist who will prepare your tooth by deciding with a shade guide which one would closely match your tooth. The dentist will discuss whether you will need anesthesia depending on the extent of tooth damage that needs to be repaired. You will need anesthesia if you need the resin to fill a tooth that is decayed.

    • 3

Get your tooth roughened by the dentist. The dentist applies the conditioning liquid to stick the bonding onto the tooth. Have the resin applied that looks like putty. It is molded and smoothed to the correct shape.

    • 4

Put on the sunglasses the dentist gives you to protect your eyes as an ultraviolet light or laser is pointed towards the tooth to harden the resin. Have it further shaped and polished to make it look like a regular tooth. Takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

    • 5

Have the dentist put the resin on the root of your tooth to protect your receding gum.
