How to Backwash an Intex Filter

Keep your pool clean with the use of a well functioning pool filter.

Backwashing the filter cleans the dirt that builds up in an Intex sand filter over time. The filter once placed in a swimming pool can aid in keeping the pool clean for up to seven years without the sand needing replacement. It does this by removing dust from your pool water, as the water runs through the sand constantly. This constant filtering causes a buildup in dirt within the unit over time, reducing the effectiveness of the filter until you clean the sand. By backwashing, you run the water through the filter in reverse. The reversal removes the dirt from the sand, increasing filter effectiveness again so that the filter can work fully once again.

Instructions

1. Switch the power off to the pump and open the pressure valve to release any air present in the pump. Remove the cap from the drain/waste outlet on the pump. Connect one end of the backwash hose to the drain/waste outlet using the clamp on the outlet to secure the hose into place. Run the other end of the hose to a draining receptacle. Switch the settings on the pump from filter to backwash by lifting the multiport valve and pointing it towards backwash. Push the valve back down into the pump.

2. Turn on the pump and watch the water flowing from it until it begins to run clear after about five minutes. Turn the switch on multiport Intex filters from rinse to wash, maintaining it in the rinse setting for 15 seconds before switching back to wash. Repeat every minute until the water runs clear.

3. Turn off the pump and switch it back to filter. Close the pressure valve and remove the backwash hose from the pump. Restore power to the pump and use normally.

Tips & Warnings

• Read the pressure reading on the pressure gauge after each backwash. When the gauge reads between seven to 10 pounds higher than the reading at the end of your last backwash, it's time to backwash once again.
