If you live in or receive your income from a business in the state of California, you may be required to file state taxes. Whether or not you need to file is determined by your income. If you do need to file taxes in California, you can download the forms and file electronically on the State of California Franchise Tax Board website.

Instructions

      Visit the California State Franchise Tax Board website.

      Click on either Individual or Businesses from the tabs at the top of the page.

      Decide whether you will e-file or want to send in paper documents. If you want to send in paper documents, click the form link in the sidebar. If you want to e-File, click the "E-File" link at the top of the page.

      Complete the form. If you chose to download the PDF form, you can use Adobe Acrobat to complete it. If you choose to e-file, you must select your e-file option and then follow the directions until you reach the form. There are several free e-file options on the e-File page.

      Submit the form. If you e-File, you can submit the form electronically by following the prompts at the end of your form completion. If you downloaded the PDF forms or filled out paper versions, you can mail them in to the address listed on the form or in the form instruction booklet.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need more time to pay your taxes, California gives you an automatic six month extension.
