Register a Business Name in Detroit, Michigan

When it comes to business rules in Detroit, Michigan, there is no "one size fits all." The protocol you must follow depends upon your business. For instance, if your business sells products, you must register for a tax ID number. Whether or not you need a business license depends upon the structure of your business. Though there are various rules regarding what each business is required to do, one rule is constant: If you are doing business under any name other than your legal name, you must register that business name.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Wayne County Clerk's Office. Request an "Assumed Names Form" if you are registering the name of a business that has a single owner. If your business has multiple owners, request the "Certificate Of Co-Partnership" application.

    • 2

Complete the application by entering the requested information, including your name, co-owner's name (if co-partnership), business owner's address, business name and business address.

    • 3

Take the application to a Notary Public to have it notarized.

    • 4

Submit the notarized application to the Wayne County Clerk, along with the filing fee and a copy of your Michigan driver's' license or Michigan State ID card. The address of the clerk's office is: 201 Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Detroit, Michigan 48226. As of November 2010, the filing fee is $23.
