How to Work for a Dominating Boss
The constant criticism and demands from a dominating boss can certainly leave any employee feeling anxious and downright annoyed, but there are several ways to handle this difficult work situation. What most people don't realize is that some supervisors feel insecure about their ability to manage others and that this insecurity often causes them to behave more like dictators than managers. With this in mind, you should be able to take the necessary steps to avoid your supervisor's controlling ways and develop a better working relationship with him or her.

1
Get a clear understanding of what your boss expects from you. Although you may not agree with your supervisor's ideas or approach to work-related issues, you must do your best to complete the tasks assigned to you in a timely manner. Put together a list of your daily, weekly and monthly tasks and ask your boss to review it. Ask him or her to provide more details or clarification as needed. Remember that regularly exceeding expectations will help you come across as a reliable and hard-working employee and your boss will be more likely change his or her negative behavior towards you as a result.

2
Focus on your work. While you can't change your supervisor's behavior, you can do your best to steer clear of any unnecessary disagreements or tension. Avoid drawing negative attention towards yourself by staying focused on your work. Create a weekly list of work projects and refer to it regularly to track your progress. Avoid taking part in office gossip or any other activities that will distract you from your work. Remember to take care of your personal business during your lunch break or after work.

Stay positive. It is easy to begin to see your boss as a villain and feel very angry towards him or her for the way that he or she treats you, but this will only make it more difficult for you to do your job. Don't think the worst of your boss and consider the different reasons why he or she is so dominating. Perhaps it is not your boss's personality, but other pressures that he or she is experiencing that are causing this negative behavior. Treat your boss and co-workers with kindness, greet everyone with a smile and remain optimistic that your situation will improve.

Establish boundaries. While it is important to avoid direct confrontation with your boss, you should never allow him or her to insult you or to behave in an unprofessional manner. Consider what type of behavior is unacceptable to you and be prepared to stand up for yourself if your boss behaves inappropriately. Remember that sexual harassment and violence are not allowed in the workplace.
