IRS Instructions for Form 2290
IRS Form 2290 is the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use tax form. A heavy highway vehicle is defined as a vehicle with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The form is not filed based on the calendar year from January to December; the calendar year for the Heavy Highway Vehicle use form runs from July 1 to June 30. In addition to filing Form 2290, you must also complete Schedule 1 (the listing of taxable heavy vehicles) and attach it to Form 2290.

Download Form 2290 from the IRS website (see Resources). When downloading the form, also make sure to download the separate instructions. The instructions are not included when downloading the form.

Insert the demographic information such as name, address, city, state and employer identification number at the top of the form. In addition to the demographic information, check the appropriate box as to the reason for filing Form 2290. Reasons for filing Form 2290 include address change, amended return, vehicle ID number correction or final return.

Calculate the applicable taxes on Part I of Form 2290. Lines one through six of Part I defines whether or not the vehicle qualifies for using this form by determining if the vehicles were used on public highways. Once it is determined that the vehicles were driven on public highways, you must insert the total tax, credits and the difference between the two (use the tax table on Page 2 of Form 2290). List the total balance due on line number six.

Report vehicles for suspension on Part II of Form 2290. This is the section where you report vehicles that no longer fit the Form 2290 taxing criteria. In other words, the vehicles are suspended from having to report on Form 2290. Complete questions seven through nine explaining why the vehicles are suspended and not subject to taxation.

Sign the form. The form requires not only your signature by the tax preparer signature. The tax preparer signature applies only to someone who was paid to complete the form. If you completed the form yourself, there's no need for you to sign as the tax preparer.

Complete Schedule 1. In addition to providing tax information on the vehicles, you must provide a detailed listing of each vehicle. Schedule 1 is where you list each vehicle along with its vehicle identification number.

Sign the bottom of Schedule 1 and attach it with Form 2290 when filing your taxes.
