Clean My Humidifier V745A Hard-Water Buildup

The Vicks V745A Humidifier is a warm-mist humidifier. Over time, the heat generated by the heating chamber within the base that creates the mist separates out impurities such as minerals and chemicals in the water, particularly hard water. These impurities then accumulate on the sides of the removable water tray and heating chamber. As this accumulation adversely affects the humidifier's efficiency and can damage the unit, you must remove the buildup or "scale" once a week to maintain it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off and unplug your Vicks V745A humidifier.

    • 2

Remove the water tank, medicine cup, cooling chamber and removable tray from the unit. Dispose of the water in the tank and then set the tank aside.

    • 3

Fill a basin with white vinegar. Place the tray in the basin. Pour white vinegar into the heating chamber until you've filled it completely.

    • 4

Wait 20 minutes and then wipe the tray and heating chamber with a lint-free microfiber cloth to dislodge the hard-water scale buildup from all the surfaces. When finished, pour out the vinegar.

    • 5

Rinse the tray and chamber with warm running water until you no longer smell vinegar. Dry the parts.

    • 6

Clean the rest of the humidifier as you would normally and then reassemble the unit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never expose the base to excess amounts of water or soak it in water.

  • Never clean the base interior -- especially the heating chamber -- with soap or chemicals.
