How to Make a Birdseed Rose

How to Make a Birdseed Rose thumbnail
Throwing rice is banned at many wedding sites.

A nature-friendly bride and groom may choose to provide bird seed to be thrown in lieu of confetti or rice after the wedding ceremony. Bags or containers of the seeds are packaged and given out to guests at the wedding site. An attractive satin rose project can be made to match the wedding decorations and to hold the birdseed for the event. The inexpensive project is fun to do with a group of friends, family members of the bridesmaids.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out 4 1/2-by-5-inch pieces of satin.

    • 2

Fold the satin in half and pin to secure the sides together.

    • 3

Sew the sides of the pinned area leaving a 1/4 inch seam. Sew one end with a gathering stitch.

    • 4

Bend one end of a piece of covered wire to form a small U-shape. Insert the straight end of the wire down through the center of the satin tube. Pull the thread to gather the cloth around the wire. The U-hook shape is inside of the rose tube.

    • 5

Wrap the thread around the outside of the tube and wire several times to secure them to one another. Tie the thread and cut away excess.

    • 6

Wrap the bottom of the tube and the wire with floral tape. Wrap the tape at an angle and pull it lightly as the friction causes the tape to adhere to itself. Add a leaf stem and continue wrapping the wire to the end.

    • 7

Pour bird seed into the tube until it is one-third to one-half full. Twist and tuck the cloth from the top of the tube down into the center area. Set the satin roses into a box or vase.
