How Can I Become a Certified Forklift Driver in NYC?
In a tough economy, any extra professional skill set can mean the difference between landing that new job and missing out on a great opportunity. Driving a forklift is one skill that can set you apart from the pack. In New York City, OSHA requires forklift operators to undergo specific equipment and classroom training. Forklift operators can receive this training from a recognized OSHA third party or from the forklift operator's employer.

1
Search for a company that provides forklift operation training and certification. Look for courses at a community college or at a trade school. Check websites like Thomas Net for forklift training services.
-
2
Enroll in a class that has both classroom and practical training. While some courses offer online training and certification, a lack of practical experience will raise a red flag with potential employers.

3
Tell your employer that you wish to receive additional forklift training if you are currently employed.
-
4
Obtain a commercial drivers license if required by your employer or an employer for whom you wish to work. Commercial drivers licenses are not mandatory for forklift operation in New York City. However, they are recommended and will make your forklift skill more marketable in other markets.
-
5
Send copies of your new forklift certification papers and your new commercial drivers license to your employer. If you are unemployed, be sure to include on your resume that you have both a commercial drivers license and a forklift certification.
