3D Model Parchment Tutorial
Many people like to use 3D rendering applications to create entire scenes, either for commercial purposes or simply as art. 3D scenes are often populated with impressive posed figures, rooms and buildings. However, some artists sometimes make the mistake of not including enough small, insignificant props in a scene to make it seem real. For example, if you are creating a medieval or colonial scene, you might want to have a rolled parchment somewhere in the scene. Making this prop is really quite simple, and there are several programs you can use for the project.
Instructions
-
Hexagon
-
1
Open Hexagon. Click on the "Lines" tab and choose the "Bezier Curves" tool.
-
2
Draw a profile of your parchment using the tool, clicking to add points and dragging as you do so to produce the curves.
-
-
3
Go to the "Dynamic Geometry" panel on the lower right and click on the little lighting bolt. Then click in the "Vertex Modeling" tab and select "Fast Extrude."
-
4
Drag the positioning arrow to expand the profile into the parchment surface you want. Save your work.
Blender
-
5
Start the Blender application. Select the default cube in the scene and delete it.
-
6
Select "Add" from the menu and choose "Add Surface." From the options, choose "Nurbs Surface."
-
7
Go to the panel at the bottom and change the "Mode" to "Edit." Right-click on points and move them to create the shape you want for your parchment. You can also select pairs or sets of points, click "R" on your keyboard and rotate them. Save your work.
Google SketchUp
-
8
Open Google SketchUp. Select and delete the default figure standing in the scene.
-
9
Go to the "Sandbox" tools at the top under the menu and click on the "From Scratch" button. Use the mouse to drag out a flat surface on the ground plane.
-
10
Select the "Smooth" tool and use it to raise and lower points to give the sheet a more uneven appearance. Change to the "Selection" tool and drag to select the entire sheet.
-
11
Select "Window" from the menu and choose "Soften Edges." In the dialog, make sure both "Smooth Normals" and "Soften Coplaner" are checked. Then adjust the slider until you like the result. Click "OK" and save your work.
