How to Dispose of Used Tires in NC
According to the Waste Reduction Fact Sheet published on the Internet by the North Carolina Office of Waste Reduction, you can't dispose of used tires in North Carolina by throwing them away outright, since they were banned from landfills in 1990. North Carolina instituted this ban in response to existing problems with tires in landfills such as water runoff contamination, pest infestations and lack of decomposition. When you replace your tires in North Carolina, you must send your old, used tires to be reused, retreaded, shredded or recycled. All North Carolina counties offer free tire disposal at one site or more.
