How to Execute a Rash Guard
Many surfers opt to wear rash guards when out on the water. Wearing wetsuits can create a rash due to friction, and rash guards put a soft, stretchy barrier between your skin and your wetsuit. The most common area for developing a surfing rash is around the armpits. Rash guards serve dual purposes by providing protection from the sun as well as protecting against abrasive sea salt that can potentially scratch your skin. Once you learn how to choose a rash guard, you will be able to execute and wear it properly.

1
Make sure the rash guard is turned the right way. The seams of rash guards face out so as to not cause unnecessary irritation. This may take some adjustment if you are wearing a rash guard for the first time.

2
Understand that it is important to choose the right size of rash guard. If it is too large, it can cause friction and not perform properly. It could even cause the kind of irritation you're looking to avoid. A rash guard that is too small can cause discomfort and poor blood circulation.

3
Avoid stretching or tearing the rash guard by placing both arms inside the sleeves before pulling it over your head. Since the garment is relatively tight, you must be careful not to put unnecessary tension on it. Ask for a friend for assistance if need be.

4
Adjust the guard to a proper fit. Pull it as far down your back and stomach as possible. Straighten and pull the sleeves until they lay flat on your skin. A proper-fitting rash guard should feel tight but not constricting.
